Finding the Key to Greater Success through One Feeling, One Word, and One Story.
I often ask myself, why is it that we always remember the bad things that happen in life?
Everyone has memories they would rather forget. When an unwelcome memory invades our mind, our natural reaction is to do whatever is necessary to block it out. No matter how hard we try, though, we cannot escape feeling the pain connected to the memory.
Pain. It invades my privacy while I’m happily spending time with my family. It sneaks up on me while I’m in a meeting or helping my husband run his business. It stalks me when I’m cheering in the stands at my daughters’ sports games.
This isn’t a rags-to-riches story, because I’ve found that adversity is not the secret sauce to success and that comparison truly is the thief of joy. It’s true, though, that I am street-smart and grew up on a poor side of town in North Carolina. While most kids rode the bus to school, I was walking because I was living in drug houses and had no one to depend on. I studied hard and made the honor roll, but I only completed eighth grade before deciding to drop out of school. I never went to high school or college. I was a baby who had a baby. My list of throbbing pain goes on and on.
Despite in recent years being the happiest I’ve ever been in my life; I’ve had to figure out how to embrace the pain from my past experiences and turn it into powerful lessons that would lead me to my own red carpet celebrating success.
I remember it like it was yesterday, the day I made up my mind to give a voice to my story.
